Legacy Night: A RAISIN IN THE SUN

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and CopyWrite Magazine invite Black and African American community members to join us for Legacy Night on May 8 at 7:30pm, a special performance of A RAISIN IN THE SUN by Lorraine Hansberry dedicated to and celebrating the Black community.

Join us beginning at 6:00pm for a special pre-show reception! Kick off the night in style with music from DJ Turtle Sooup, complimentary appetizers, and a free drink!

This event is produced in partnership with CopyWrite Magazine. We are grateful for the leadership of our host committee: Lexi S Brunson, Editor-in-Chief and Owner of CopyWrite Magazine; Lafayette Crump, City of Milwaukee Commissioner of City Development; Donovan Johnson, City of Milwaukee Office of African American Affairs; and Jay Roby, Ph.D., Milwaukee Public Schools educator and MCT Board of Trustees.

What is Legacy Night?

The intention behind this event is to purposefully create an environment in which a Black audience can experience and discuss this play created and performed by Black artists, in a space that celebrates the Black Community and centers their perspectives. Legacy Night is inspired by a similar event created in 2019 by actor and playwright Jeremy O. Harris, where for the first time ever, every seat in Broadway’s Golden Theatre was occupied by Black audience members.

MCT's first Legacy Night took place in March 2024 in conjunction with our production of THE MOUNTAINTOP by Katori Hall. We call this special performance Legacy Night not only because legacy was one of the major themes within THE MOUNTAINTOP, but also to honor and celebrate our Black and African American community and the legacy we hope to create together in Milwaukee.

A RAISIN IN THE SUN was the first play produced on Broadway written by a Black woman and is still one of the American theater’s most impactful works. We are proud to center our third annual Legacy Night event around a performance of this trailblazing classic.

What if I'm not Black or African American?

Thanks for asking! If you'd like to support this initiative, we encourage you to join us in holding space for this Black community gathering by choosing to experience the play at another performance; however, no one will be turned away from this event. Tickets are available for purchase throughout the run of the show here

What happens to a dream deferred?

Lorraine Hansberry’s trailblazing classic—the first play produced on Broadway written by a Black woman and still one of the American theater’s most impactful—follows the Younger family as they wrestle with big dreams in the face of economic hardship and the harsh injustices of discrimination on Chicago’s South Side.  With language as lyrical as it is unflinching, A RAISIN IN THE SUN remains a triumphant, deeply human portrait of the determination to build a better life than the one the world is willing to give you, and a powerful reminder that the right to dream belongs to everyone.

Run time: approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes including one intermission

A RAISIN IN THE SUN features Olivia Dawson, Kamani Graham, Dimonte Henning, Ethan Hightire, Ken Miller, Malaina Moore, and more to be announced!

A RAISIN IN THE SUN is being performed in the Broadway Theatre Center's Cabot Theatre.
